Celebrating Under 8’s Week with Goodstart Early Learning & a cultural dance show

By Lauren – Gold Coast Mum

This year's theme for Under 8’s Week is "children exploring language and culture" and what better way to celebrate than through a captivating interactive storytelling session!

My twincesses and I were lucky enough to pop along to a free event held at Goodstart Early Learning Pimpama on May 22 to watch: Mana: A Cultural Dance Performance with Bernard Mangakahia.

Mana is a cultural dance show which is educational, multicultural and musical with plenty participation and tons of fun.

This dynamic, vibrant and inspiring show is designed and performed by Bernard Mangakahia.
With more than 30 years of experience, Bernard understands that children are natural learners and that plenty of play and dance in childhood accelerates learning.
His aim is to offer every child a rich unique, fun cultural learning experience.

The children are introduced to important concepts such as different words and languages, geography (big map), different genres of music, performing arts and social awareness.

The performance was fabulous, and my twincesses – along with the rest of the little (and adult) people in attendance – thoroughly enjoyed it!

The show starts with the children watching and participating in Native American hand signing.

A Native American hoop dance was next – which the kids loved! Here, Bernard manipulates 7 hoops over his body while spinning and dancing to create different shapes of animals and plants: eagle, snake, horse, butterfly, flower and bumblebee.
The children also have an opportunity to join in.

Next, Bernard demonstrates the New Zealand Haka and poi dance and some Hula. Next, he shows off some hip hop – and the children joined in to showcase their dance moves.

Goodstart Early Learning Pimpama is perfectly located across the road from a state school, making drop offs/pick ups very convenient!

My twincesses (who attend a Goodstart centre) and I enjoyed learning about the different cultures and traditions in such an informative and entertaining manner and are thankful to Goodstart Early Learning/Pimpama for hosting this event!

This year, Under Eights Week is held from the 19th to the 29th May.
It is an event that has been running in Queensland for more than 60 years and is coordinated by Early Childhood Australia (ECA) Queensland Branch.

Many childcare centres around the region arranged events to tie in with Under Eights Week, did yours?
